POSTPONED until further notice

The health and well being of our guests, physicians, and staff are of the utmost importance to us. This is why the 2020 Advances in Pulmonary Hypertension Conference set to take place on June 26th is postponed until further notice due to COVID-19. Information regarding the rescheduled date will be released at a later time. Please contact cvconferences@northwestern.edu with any questions or concerns.

Description

Pulmonary embolism is a common diagnosis presenting across the spectrum of medical specialties and in multiple healthcare settings that has important short and long term implications for both patients and health care providers. The last 10 years has seen the rise of the implementation of Pulmonary Embolism Response Teams (PERT) to try and address some of the challenges associated with high risk interventions at the time of diagnosis. Although the use of PERT teams is not universal and reporting of utility of PERTs has been spotty, the PERT movement has certainly raised awareness of PE diagnosis and brought potentially high risk interventions for acute PE to the forefront of discussion without good guidelines for how and when they should be implemented. Finally, there is a knowledge gap surrounding long term implications for patients after their acute PE diagnosis. Although up to 50% of patients report ongoing functional limitation even after a year of treatment recognizing who and why they develop these long term problems remains difficult. This program is designed to increase knowledge of the presentation, diagnosis, and acute and long term management of the patients with acute and chronic pulmonary thromboembolic disease. It will review and address ways to implement the latest practice guidelines into clinical practice. The program is designed to improve the competence of physicians in managing patients who present both in the outpatient and hospital setting, and know when to refer to specialty centers for advanced care.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize high risk pulmonary embolism patients.

  2. Determine when advanced therapy for acute pulmonary embolism is appropriate.

  3. Realize long term clinical outcomes patients develop after acute pulmonary embolism and determine appropriate tools to screen for these medical issues.

  4. Apply understanding of long term pulmonary embolism outcomes to recognize chronic thromboembolic disease and its implications for management.

Target Audience

This continuing medical education program is designed to meet the educational needs of cardiologists, pulmonologists, internal medicine, hospitalists, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, cardiology and
