Description
Pulmonary embolism is a common diagnosis presenting across the spectrum of medical specialties and in multiple healthcare settings that has important short and long term implications for both patients and health care providers. The last 10 years has seen the rise of the implementation of Pulmonary Embolism Response Teams (PERT) to try and address some of the challenges associated with high risk interventions at the time of diagnosis. Although the use of PERT teams is not universal and reporting of utility of PERTs has been spotty, the PERT movement has certainly raised awareness of PE diagnosis and brought potentially high risk interventions for acute PE to the forefront of discussion without good guidelines for how and when they should be implemented. Finally, there is a knowledge gap surrounding long term implications for patients after their acute PE diagnosis. Although up to 50% of patients report ongoing functional limitation even after a year of treatment recognizing who and why they develop these long term problems remains difficult. This program is designed to increase knowledge of the presentation, diagnosis, and acute and long term management of the patients with acute and chronic pulmonary thromboembolic disease. It will review and address ways to implement the latest practice guidelines into clinical practice. The program is designed to improve the competence of physicians in managing patients who present both in the outpatient and hospital setting, and know when to refer to specialty centers for advanced care.
